The angel led Ezekiel to see God's glory approaching the temple from the east. When he saw this, he fell face down. It was an all consuming experience full of overwhelming emotions. God entered the temple (His home) and the Spirit lifted Ezekiel to the inner court where God spoke to him.
God had returned to reside permanently. It represented the reversal of all the tragedy that the people had experienced. The law of the temple is to keep it holy and the people had desecrated it land and building. The building was based filling it with God's statues that were designed on His laws. Here they would be carried out in a holy and pure manner.
An altar was built to ensure that the temple stayed holy. The sacrifices would be done by the Zadok, purified priesthood from the Levites that were consecrated to serve God now. They were holy instead of performing holiness. It was the focus of the temple: maintaining holiness.
The first offering was a bull for the sin offering. The next day it continued with a goat. This went on for seven days. On the eighth day, it was a fellowship offering. God's presence gave it a whole new level of holiness. This all foreshadowed Jesus' sacrifice.
