Am I the only one that wonders what life was like for the generations that did not see the miracles? There were periods of where God was moving behind the scenes not doing anything big that would be noticed for hundreds of years. What was life like for His faithful followers? I kind of understand how people began to live life according to their own moral codes. They did not have their expectations written out to go over whenever it may be needed. Their leaders maybe felt discouraged and stopped directing because they didn't see the point. Maybe they understood that if things got really bad, then maybe God would show up. Being in between major life events can be hard. It requires living truly by faith.
The Israelites had lived in the in between for possibly a few hundred years when a Levite woman unknowingly gave birth to the next miraculous era. She was not concerned about what kind of man he would become. She had given birth to a beautiful baby boy and just wanted was to keep him alive one more day. She managed to keep him hidden for three months. The baby would cry when he wanted or needed something and how do you keep people from ever hearing that. I am sure her close neighbors helped along with his brother and sister. She had already gotten away with one son. She knew they would not let her keep a second.
This baby was put into a papyrus basket. It was woven, but covered in a tar and pitch, so it would float. His sister put him in the reeds of the Nile to keep him hidden and safe. FYI, that was not a safe place to be. Enemies were everywhere, let alone crocodiles and other predators. However, it was the best they could do in their circumstance. Mariam, the sister, would spend the day watching over him while looking like she was being productive.
One day, the Pharaoh's daughter came to that location to bath. She found the baby and decided to keep him as her own. I believe God moved in her heart to love this helpless baby. Mariam was there and volunteered to find a wet nurse. She went and got her mom. This new profession gave the real mother two to three more years with her son. Maybe the mother got to stay on as a babysitter of sorts. Maybe the princess knew the truth about it all. We don't know the details. We do know that the baby grew into a young man. He knew where he came from and who his family was.
That baby became the man named Moses, which means I drew him out of the water. He witnessed the cruelty that his people endured and when he could not take it anymore he beat a guard to death. This led to a chain of events that would change history. He had to leave all the luxury he had always know to go on the run. He went from a fortunate baby to a privileged boy to a criminal, but God allowed all this to be able to use him later. He found a new family among the Midians and became a shepherd. God is always using the shepherds. He got married and began his own family. All this in the first 40 years of his life.
Sometimes it is the people that you least expect that will change the world as we know it. Maybe it is an event and then the people who step up that try to fix it that impact us. Either way, we can wait for life to happen or we can be a part of it. Make a few mistakes, but learn from them. You never know how God can use any of it.
