If there are things in your life that you want to change, then it is important to know your history. Your family history, even family that you never met, may have impact on your present. There are certain aspects of personality, habit forming, and mental strategy that are inherited. If you know your history, then you can see what worked and what did not for others. Why always learn from your mistakes when you can learn from others and avoid a few challenges along the way?
The Hebrews had an incredible history, but they lost everything. Their historians and priest went back to their recorded history to try to get things straight. To line up family heritages, but I think also for some people it was to try to figure out where it all went wrong. If you don't know where it went wrong, then how are of you supposed to know where to start fixing it?
They began their biological history with Adam and moved straight to Noah where it began to branch out until they got to the twelve tribes. They took the time to be as detailed as they could with very limited sources. Who knows how long it had been since anyone had recorded this king of history. Maybe not since David did his census. That is where things began to tie together. They went all the way to David and his descendants, then to the kings of Judah because after David the nation split.
They did not stop until they got to their excile. Now they could see everything laid out. Maybe not personal details, but when it is all written out it normally becomes easier to tie things together. Usually there is no easy solution or answer. but the more informed a person is the better the options are. It also reveals the seasons of things. There are seasons of great blessings and seasons of famine. You have to understand what season you are in.
