We have a lot of little quotes or saying that we repeat with a lightness, but they come from somewhere. Don't kill the messenger did not come from the Bible, but we can use it for a real application. Some of our common sayings do have a very serious background.
When Mordecai discovered how his people were going to be annihilated because of his actions, he mourned. It was a heavy burden even if it was for the right reason. The entire Jewish nation mourned because what else could they do?
Esther lived in a very isolated world where she had no idea what was happening until housemaids and eunuchs informed her. Probably idol gossip type of talk because it was the most interesting thing happening in the kingdom at the time. However the news held a huge impact on the queen. She was greatly distressed when she heard. She was afraid, but she could not show anyone her fear because no one in her surroundings knew the truth: Esther was a Jew.
Esther reached out to Mordecai to learn what he was doing and why. She had to communicate through an eunuch, Hathach. Mordecai gave her Haman's decree and informed her of everything. Then, he commanded her to go talk to the king. That was not an easy task.

Esther may be the king's wife, but even she was not allowed to approach him unless he requested her company. Anyone who approached the king without being summoned was put to death. It makes me think that they lived separate lives for the most part because he had not summoned her in 30 days. She knew what happened to his first wife. Yet, she was in the position to be the representative for an entire nation.
The meeting with Mordecai did not help Esther stress levels. Mordecai warned her if she stayed quiet that she would die anyway and the nation's deliverance would come from someone else. God had placed her in that position for that reason. Basically she was to go to the king in hopes that he would not kill the messenger. She had to trust in Mordecai's wisdom and gift of discernment.
Like a true hereon, she faced her fear head on and became steadfast to do what she had to do. She asked Mordecai to gather all the Jews to fast with her for three days. After that, she would go approach the king if he had not requested to see her. She would face the nation's dilemma even if it meant her death, but she believed in the power of prayer and the key of fasting. It was risky, but it had to be done.
