A Leader's Folly

When King Hezekiah recovered from his mysterious illness, the King Merodach-baladan of Babylon sent envoys with gifts and letters.  This made Hezekiah happy.  The gifts were priceless treasures.  In return he decided to show the envoys all the treasures and the strength of his kingdom.  He showed them everything impressive about his kingdom.  It was folly, but he believed that they were allies against Assyria.  He thought that made them safe.
Isaiah on the other hand was more cautious.  He wanted to know why they were there.  He suspected that they had an anterior motive.  Isaiah listened to God in a way that Hezekiah didn't.  That is why God talked to Isaiah.  He warned Isaiah that Babylon would take away all the treasures along with some of the royal bloodline.  Jerusalem would be left with nothing and Hezekiah's children would pay the price of becoming eunuchs in the Babylon Kingdom.
Hezekiah was living a care free life after his recovery.  He appeared unconcerned about the information Isaiah had given him.  He had faith that there would be peace and security while he was alive.  He took comfort in that.  He had acted foolishly and there was nothing he could do to change it, so he had to move forward. He did not live in the real world and did not seem to fully understand the consequences.  It could be interpreted as selfish or indifferent.
