The priests and their families were not supposed to drink wine or live on their own house, but tents. They were to live on the tithes and offerings of the people to set an example of obedience to God. Their job was to be spiritual leaders, help everyone that comes across their path, and educate. That means they had to lead by example. If they fail, then the nation will fail.
As a Christian we are the example in the world of how to live. We show the people around us how to obey God's Word. We may be the only Bible that they ever read. It is a lot of responsibility. It is our job to teach them how to serve God and turn away from wickedness. However, all the good works and acts of obedience mean nothing if you do not do it out of love for God. He only recognizes acts done out of devotion and love, not strictly self-discipline.
No matter what we do, some people will never listen. They will chose not to obey God's Word. Some Spiritual leaders will chose their own path instead developing a relationship with God. This will bring disaster to their lives and sometimes their nation. Obedience with love never fails to serve firmly with honor. It leads you to a life of blessings.
