A Lament is a passionate expression of grief or sorrow. It is mourning in an expression to God. When Jerusalem was exiled from the promised land they were grieving. They lamented to Him because who else could understand or do anything about it.
God was angry. His people had ignore, rebelled, and rejected Him. He had given them everything and they didn't appear to appreciate anything. They made His home on Earth a place of dishonor. Israel had become His enemy and that is the last place anyone wants to be. How long can you insult and disrespect power before it destroys you?
Jerusalem had altered God's laws to suite their lives. In conclusion for their lives of sin God stopped communicating with them. They no longer received visions. God had gone silent because the prophets did not tell the people what He had told them. This deserved to be lamented as their hearts were being destroyed. It felt hopeless as they faced the scorn of the world.
They willingly went into the darkness, out of His light, into places where evil seems normal. God will not follow. People can repent and move back to His light, but He will not go to the darkness. He had warned them of what would happen if they did not stop. Yet when death was everywhere they seemed shocked.
They never really believed that God would punish His people like He did their enemies. Yet, the Day that God released His anger, there was no escape. There was no compassion or defense. Jeremiah records all this trying to wrap his head around it himself.
