I don't know one person that has had doubt in their life: work, future, direction, relational, or spiritual. It is normal. Doubt can be a good thing because it makes you decide what you believe, want to risk, or who is worth putting energy into. It only becomes a sin when you stay in doubt and don't face it. Facing your doubts determines what you believe once and for all. It will make you stronger and more determined to stand up for what you believe. If you chose not to invest or believe, then you know to walk away.
Moses had doubts in his mission. He did not doubt God, but he doubted himself. I mean this was a huge undertaking, who would feel confident to face what he was headed toward. God was patient with Moses as he worked through his doubts, but in a very small time table. Most of us get more than three days to figure things out. God showed Moses what He could do to help Moses get over the hurdle. After all when you have God in your corner, you really only have a small task to do. He takes care of all the big things.
God gave Moses three miraculous signs. They were all different to display on a small scale what He could do. It also displayed creativity. At the same time, I think the miracles would have made me a little nervous, like they did Moses. They were daring, but God needed Moses to be daring.
Moses had faith, but it was weak and he let his fear rule over his faith. He used his speech impediment as an excuse to not to be able to speak for the people. At this point, I think God was a little over Moses' excuses. He had chosen Moses and it was time for Moses to step up. He had given more to Moses than anyone else to ease his doubts. God just said He would teach Moses what to say, basically that He had this.
Moses was out of excuses, so he finally confessed he did not want to go. It took all that to get him to speak the truth behind his doubts. Moses did not want the responsibility of being the chosen person. He did not want to go back and face his past. He did not want to put in the work that would be required to get this done. This made God angry because He had asked Moses to do something great and expected Moses to do it. God countered that He would give Moses his brother Aaron to help him. God would speak to Moses, but Aaron would speak to the people.
God could have done all the miracles without a person. He chose Moses. Moses was out of excuses, so he got his family and headed home. During all of this God hardened the new Pharaoh's heart, to make sure all He had set into motion would happen a certain way. On the way back to Egypt, Moses met up with his brother who was coming to him. Together they brought hope to their people.
We are chosen for certain things in life. Most of us will never be asked to do anything big and dramatic, but God expects us to do what He calls us to do. Will you make excuses or will you embrace the uncomfortable? I promise God will not keep you in your comfort zone. Face whatever doubts you have and watch Him do great things in and through you.
