United Under 1 Leader

Unity is a wonderful thing.  It makes life so much easier.  The thing that is hard is to keep it because the more people there are, the more opinions, differences, and personalities that have to be dealt with.  Unity takes work, especially in the good times.  King David understood this.
Once the civil war was over, all the tribes united once again to be Israel.  Israel came to Hebron to acknowledge David as their king.  There they anointed him to make it official.  He was only 30 years old.  David became the one king over the entire nation.  He reigned 40 years.
David's reign had a lot of ups and down.  He was not perfect, but he did a great job overall.  He went to fight the Jebusites over Jerusalem.  When he took the city and it became known as the City of David.
David fortified Jerusalem making it the strong hold for the nation.  King Hiram of Tyre built David a palace in the city to show him honor.  When David moved to Jerusalem he had 11 more sons.  That gave him 19 sons between all his wives.
The Philistines were not happy about the turn of events.  They had taken care of him and his men.  Now he was the king over their sworn enemy.  On top of that, he now knew how they thought.  If he did not know their strategies, then he could more or less predict how they would handle things.  When they cam looking for David, David inquired on God on how to handle it.  God gave David what he needed to push the Philistines back leaving Israel in years of peace.
God gave the people one leader to unite them.  God gave them a leader after His own heart.  David was God's shepherd over His people.  He followed God's instruction and that is what made him successful.

2 Samuel 5
