When Ahab died, Moab decided it was a good time to rebel. King Ahaziah was injured by a fall when he was responding the rebellion. Instead of turning to God for healing and guidance, he turned to Baal-Zebub's god, Ekron about his recover. The king chose to trust man and false gods over faith in the one living God.
Elijah was still around doing as God led him to do. An angel came to him about the king's situation and to send a message to inform Ahaziah that he would die in that bed because he refused to turn to God. The king soldiers were sent after Elijah, but God was with him which no one would be able to harm him.
This means that the soldiers sent would be in harms way. Elijiah did warn them what would happen if they persued the kings orders. They were consumed by fire because they feared their king more than God.
The king sent three sets of soldiers to bring Elijah to him. The third commander was smart to approach Elijah humbly. He asked Elijah to go with him for the life of himself and his men. An angel gave Elijah permission to go with them, so he went to give the king the message to his face. The king did die in his bed without any sons. That means Joram succeeded him.
