Satan's attacks are real. He can attack the mind (his personal favorite), the body, put people or things in your way to detour you, and other ways. His attacks are almost always subtle because he can get away with more if we don't advertise that it is from him. We blame God, ourselves, other people, or anything to not say that Satan had a hand in things. However, how we deal with Satan is just as important as what he throws at us.
Satan took joy in being allowed to attack Job. He truly thought that Job would blaspheme. I bet he was angry when Job chose to worship God even though he had lost everything that mattered to him in this world, but his house and wife. Or so he thought.
Satan went back to Heaven with the angels to listen to God boast about Job, aka his personal failure. Yet, Satan was not done. He wanted to attack Job's health and vitality. When he had truly lost everything, then of course he curse God's name. His thought was that people will do anything to live.
God agreed because he knew what kind of man Job was. It was not that he wanted to hurt Job. He just knew that Job could handle it. Satan was limited though. He could not take Job's life. This is when things get as bad as a person can have it.
Satan left God and went to work. He put sores on Job from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head. He must have looked pathetic and felt miserable. His wife found him repulsive. She was not the sweet care taker. Her response was not from Satan's influence. It was all her.
Job's wife told him that he should curse God and die. His response was that she was a fool. He did not sin no matter where the attacks came from. It is amazing because he had not idea what was behind any of this. He just knew that God provides and takes away. It is not his place to chose how.
News about all that had happened to Job got around. At some point three of his true friends came to comfort him. I just have to remind myself that you can be a true friend and not be what a friend needs. We all have worldly moments. Whose to say they were believers anyway.
Eliphas, Bildad, and Zophar came to comfort Job. When they saw him, they wept because he was so transformed. I imagine that he had lost coloring, weight, and appeared weak and distorted. They sat on the ground in silence for seven days and nights because of his suffering. I like to think that it was out of respect and contemplation. They probably thought he was dying and just wanted to be there for him.
