Rebuttal

A rebuttal is contradiction or a way of proving something wrong.  It is not necessarily an argument, but a way of correcting a misgiven idea or misunderstood statement.  It is known to be used in court, but scientist and educators use this form of correction also.  When it comes to a conversation, you have to be careful on whom you are addressing.  Some people will not be open-minded enough to get it and then it will turn into a heated argument.
Job's conversation with his friends is a great example of how it can turn into an argument.  He had his speech, they responded, and now he is correcting their misunderstanding.  All four of them were letting their tempers get the better of them.  We have to be careful with our words because once something comes across accusatory, then the chances of the recipient really hearing you are slim.
Job pointed out to his friends that they were horrible at comforting a friend in need.  Why were they still arguing with him?  They would not change how he feels.  They will not change the fact that he did not have any hidden sin.
Even if Job had sinned, it was his sin and not theirs.  Who were they to attack him?  Had he not been attacked enough?   Had he not lost enough?  Why were they making it worse?  He was justifiably hurt.  He had been transparent with his pain and they judged him for it.
A good rebuttal is short statement without judgment, insult, or scorn.  It is based on the facts being laid out for review or investigation.  When used to attack a person, it does not provide an opportunity for healing personally or relationally.  It cuts deeper than most people would ever admit.
Job knew he was innocent and stood his ground on that fact.  Nothing anyone said would change that.  It was all he had left to hold onto.  Whatever hope that might have been revived, his friends crushed and caused him to suffer more deeply.  He just wanted to die, but now he wanted heaven to intercede and vindicate his name before he died.  He was still clueless that this was all a game to Satan and a turning point for God.  When this is over, the way people were able to approach God in prayer and perspective would change.

Job 16
