Some people think the old testament is boring. It is all about the things you are not allowed to do. What they don't see is the gift of boundaries. God gave us stories of people that made tragic mistakes and miracles victories that we can learn from. It shows us how God is personally involved in every story even when He is not recognized or acknowledges. Psalms is no different. It is about reflection and finding meaning in the messiness of life.
God gives us lessons, but if we do not learn from them we are doomed to repeat them without growing or move forward. God wants us to learn from our past, so that we can teach others what to avoid to make their lives easier. All we can do is our part and pray. It is up to the next generation to listen or ignore the pearls of wisdom.
We learn from our past by removing our rebellious or stubborn nature. You may be right most of the time, but no one is right all the time. We sometimes have to take a humble look at our lives and realize where we messed things up. This takes self-discipline to be honest while staying faithful and loyal to God. Some things never need to be forgotten, so the lesson never dies.
The people that choose to turn their back on God are shutting their eyes to all that He has done for them. They willfully test Him while complaining and being angry that He did not make their lives as they imagined as perfect. It proves that they do not believe in Him or that they do not trust Him. Yet God is merciful by restraining His anger against those that are grieving Him.
God's punishment is not a release of anger. It is about giving people the opportunity to see the error of their ways and return to Him. However, one day there will be a complete separation. All the people that reject God will be destroyed and placed into the pit.
Psalms 78
