Jeremiah was a good prophet. He did everything God asked, even when it brought Him pain and confusion. He just needed to talk through some of the issues with God. He did not have an easy job. He needed confidence. He needed encouragement. He needed to hear God's voice no matter what He said. He had the courage to ask God directly the age old question: why does the wicked prosper?
Jeremiah knew that God is righteous, but he was not happy with God's justice. It was very hard him to watch what looked like the evil thriving and God's people suffering. Evil was growing and spreading. Jeremiah wanted to know how much longer this would last. He wanted it to end.
God understood Jeremiah's heart and desire for justice. Humanity can't keep up with the pace of the wicked and the endgame. People betray and God hates the evil that we do to each other. You can't even trust your own family sometimes. From all appearances, Jeremiah was right: people can't be trusted. God's anger burns against all wickedness.
However, God loves all of His creation. That includes the lost people. That does not mean that Her will not hand them over to Satan. Evil will receive his inheritance: hell. They will not gain anything in the afterlife. All evil will be uprooted. Once that happens, then God can show compassion again to all that remain. This is a promise of God, so it will happen.
Allowing wickedness into your heart has severe consequences. The punishment is following Satan where ever he is led. If the wicked heart refuses to listen to God's warnings, then it will be destroyed. God was talking to Jeremiah to ease his soul, but what He said is for everyone to understand that it applies to them too.
