You don't see what Ezekiel was seeing without it having an affect on you. He had to mourn over the sin of his nation as God points it out. It had to hurt to see that they did it to themselves which means it could have been avoided. However, I think he understood the purpose of it all. We sometimes have to go through horrible things to really see the need for Jesus. We can't do it on our own.
Ezekiel was charged to speak of God's wrath on Israel. He had to tell the people of God's conviction against their idolatrous hearts: destruction. God would destroy all the idols and their altars, shrines, and places of worship. The followers of these gods would have their bones spread out before what they chose over God.
He had to tell them how they would die and that only a few would be spared. Those that remember that their heart has been adulterous against God will hate themselves for it, but they will remember God. It took this for Israel to remember God.
God destroyed the land turning it into a desert to be a reminder. God does not want us to turn to Him out of fear. It was not to hurt His people, but it was righteous judgment that had to happen to ensure justice in the world. No one is exempt to live in sin without consequences. Not even God's people. We need to mourn sin more than we mourn the consequences.
