Prophecies against a nation is intense, but against more than one feels apocalyptic. It was not that severe. However, the people that lived through it probably didn't feel that way. I can't even imagine what it was like for them. Jeremiah's prophecy focused on 10 nations: Egypt, Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Edom, Syria, Kedar, Hazor, Elam, and Babylon. They were under judgment for not living up to God's standards.
Egypt was a nation that was always considered an enemy of God, so he waged war against them around 600 BC. They were correct to be terrified, but where could they run. No one can out run God or His judgment. The day that God poured out His vengeance on Egypt was horrific.
King Nebuchadnezzar was God's tool to attack Pharaoh Neco. God had used Jeremiah to prophesy that this would happen. They were prepared. They had the tools to win war, yet they were crushed. Babylon destroyed cities to the point that they were uninhabitable.
The nation's beauty was destroyed and it began 25-30 miles south of Cairo. Thebes was attached, but it was not destroyed. Over time it was able to come back. This also applies to God's people. They would be judged, but they would be saved. They would be banished in discipline, but once the punishment had been fulfilled they would be restored.
