The elders were the the leaders of the nation: spiritual and political. God judged them for their idolatrous ways and leading the people away from Him. He was going to condemn them unless they repented and turned from their detestable ways. They became a stumbling block for the nation of Israel. Stumbling blocks have to be removed to avoid straying away from God.
Sin separates you from God, so when you wonder away it is safe to assume that you are embracing a life of sin over a relationship with God. It reveals where your heart really lives. Countries can have faithful people, but if their leaders are not faithful then they are all considered unfaithful. That means as a nation, even the believers, there will be judgment. It can lead to the destruction of the nation and leads to premature deaths. Don't ignore the truth because the lie sounds better.
A nation destroyed means that the righteous are included in the punishment. That is why we have to speak up and fight for a righteous country. We can't sit passively by and just think well at least I am safe. You still have to see the desolation of your nation like Ezekiel did. Once it gets to this point, then parents can't save their own children.
Judgment is dreadful, so why sit by and just let it happen. In life judgment is usually violence, famine, dangerous animals, or plague. Eternal is the pit. Take care of your own salvation, then start working toward God's goal: salvation for all. Morality is an individual responsibility. It is not transferable, but you can show people the way. Be assured that God's judgment is righteous.
