Purpose of the Law

The law was created by God to help people live together with healthy boundaries.  It is also supposed to show you your own flaws, so that you see your need to Him.  Once Jesus came things changed.  He opened our eyes to a new way of seeing the law.  Faith no longer was based on works (acting perfect), but on a relationship.
When Jesus left this world (alive), he opened the door to the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is another game changer.  The difference is that Jesus came to show the world how things could be different.  The Holy Spirit only really speaks to those that accept the invitation of Salvation.  He speaks to the heart and soul revealing how the law is to be applied situation by situation.
You cannot attain the Holy Spirit on your own desire.  He is not a genie.  He is not your slave magician.  He is a vital part of the God Triad.  He will not bend to selfish desire.  You have to open yourself up to Him, then He will change you from the inside out.  It is a beautiful and loving experience to grow and change with Him.
Blessings come from faith.  You can't live a safe life in a bubble.  The more you try the more pain and disappointment you will face.  Becoming a Christian does not ensure a care free happily ever after.  It changes you to make you better equipped to face all that is wrong with this world.  It motivates you to help make changes that makes the world more in God's image.  That means that you invite more problems into your life, but through your life God can work unthinkable things.
The law and faith are basically polar opposites.  The law reveals sin.  Faith removes sin.  The common denominator is sin.  We would never have needed the law if sin never existed.  We would still live an utopian existence, but we don't.  We live a world consumed with sin.  That means we need the law to keep a healthy perspective on how to live.
The Holy Spirit is our mediator with God.  We are prisoners to sin until we start living a life of faith, but even then we need the Holy Spirit to help us navigate the best way to live life.  We need Him to tell God our purest heart when we mess up.  We still need to repent when we sin.  That will not change until the end of time.  The only way we can ever be released from sin is through faith.  Salvation is only the first step.
A Christian is no longer under the tight bands of the law.  This is not because you are any more special than the unbelievers.  That just means you accepted the key to release you from your chains of sin.  You are able to get up and take a look around you to start fixing what is wrong in your life.  Once you are ready, then you can start helping other people as long as you keep listening to what the Holy Spirit tells your heart and conscience.  If you are a Christian, then you are an heir of Jesus, so act like it.
