Abitub means "father of goodness". Abitub was a Benjaminite. I like how names had meaning back in the time that the Bible was written. A person's name gave you an idea of who you were dealing with because the average person is only mentioned once or twice. If our Abitub lived up to his name, then he was a good man.
Abitub is mentioned in a list that Saul had put together for a genealogy. Abitub was in Sharharaim's family line. His mother was Hushim. Men's hierarchy in the family fell under the mother's place in the family. In Abitub's case, his father had divorced his mother. That kind of make him and his brother outcast. Abitub's brother was Elpaal. It does not look like Abitub had a family of his own. It may not be a lot of information, but he lived a life worthy of being recorded into history.
A family may be dysfunctional, but we just need to remember that everyone has issues. A family will either come together and become stronger in hard times or fracture. One person can draw people together or drive people apart. What kind of family member to do you want to be? Trust God and pray over your family.
