Afoot is preparation or progress. It is when something is happening or beginning to happen. It changes up the stagnant and turns it into energy. Progress may be slow, but you are working toward something. It could move so fast that you can't even see all the detail. The point is you are moving forward.
Jesus and his apostles needed a quiet place. They were tired. They had been on the move for a while. They rarely ate the way they needed to which takes it toll on the body. They left on a boat to find a quiet place for a short time to rejuvenate.
The problem is that they were all kind of famous at this point. People recognized them when they were leaving and decided to follow. Many went afoot to be where they would dock. Jesus saw what they were doing and his heart held compassion. He forgot about being weary and that his men needed rest. He goal was to be their shepherd, so they would not wonder the world lost. Instead of taking a break, he began to teach them many things.
Paul arranged to meet some traveling companions in Assos. From there they would go afoot by ship. The group sailed to Mitylene. They passed the island Kios, then Samos, then the third day they arrived at Miletus. This is where Paul's companions journey stopped. However Paul did not want to stop in Asia. He was in a hurry to get back to Jerusalem. He wanted to be there for the Festival of Pentecost. Paul liked going afoot alone sometimes.
