We all follow someone whether it is a person that we know or someone we wished we knew. When we were children, we followed our parents and probably siblings. In the core years they are the people that help build your confidence or destroy it. The people that we follow as we get older influence us in different ways. They can be role models, people that you respect, idols, or roadblocks.
David was a king that had a way with people. He was smart, quick witted, and influential. He knew how to bring the best out in his people. He was a leader worth following. He was a leader that everyone wanted to know. He also recruited the fiercest men, men that he saw something in. They may not all have been born Israelite, but he would adopt the people into his nation.
David honored the people that followed him through thick and thin by giving them rank and made it clear where each and every one came from. That was kind of like having a title back then. Because of how he treated his people they would follow him to their own death. That made his army great. He could not give everyone titles, so he made sure that they got recorded in some way. He put the number of each clan that was in his army and pointed out how they were all volunteers. He did not force his people to die for him, work for him, or labor for him. It showed the strength from each clan.
His reputation went beyond his people. That reputation built him wealth. He always had the supplies that he needed. We can learn a lot from the people we follow. If we follow the right people, then we can become great. We need the discernment that comes from the Holy Spirit to be able to have the wisdom to know whom to invest in and to whom to walk away from.
