Today the church staff usually consist of people from all walks of life that become leaders in the church: pastor, 1st lady, minister of music, youth pastor, teachers, deacons, and more. Some get paid, most do not. It should be a calling not a job.
When Moses was alive he organized the Levites to be the church staff. It changed a little over time, but when David became king he got things in order again. By the time he died, the Levites had jobs that would be recorded for all time. These jobs would be passed down from generation to generation.
David understood the importance of every aspect of service to God. He categorized the Levites into three groups: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. The divisions were categorized even more into temple supervisors, officials or judges, gatekeepers (security), and musicians. There was already the preachers, storage keepers, cooks, treasury, and cleaning staff.
David felt that God should have more than the necessities. To serve God is to live a life of worship. Worship should incorporate joy which required music, food, and financial security. Organization is an important part of worship. David's organization over the Levites may have been the best gift he left the people.
Even when the Jews were in exile, they had these records to go back to. It gave them hope of one day returning home and to better times. These would be the divisions of the Levites to determine their life long jobs from that point on. We have options when it comes to are careers and lives that they did not.
If you a person that is a part of the church staff, study over your position and take it seriously. It is a position that demands a lot. It is not about you, but completely about serving God. If you are a part of a church that does not honor the positions properly, then you need to confront it or find another church.
