Everyone has consequences. It doesn't matter how important or small you think you are. It doesn't matter if a person looks like they are getting away with something. God always sees and he is not prejudice, changeable, or unjust. He made each of us and loves us equally. He knows each person, so consequences may look different for each person.
King David committed sins that cost an innocent man his life. That cost him his son. He was a warrior for God, but that also meant that he had blood on his hands. He wanted to build God his temple, but God could not let someone with blood on his hands build something that was meant to be pure and Holy.
God sent the prophet Nathan to David to explain to the king why he could not build the temple. God had other plans for David and those plans made him great. God wanted something for David's son and that was going to be to build the temple during a time of peace. David excepted this and created the plans to make it easier for Solomon and to be able to feel like he would still have a part in the development.
David always accepted God's consequences. I am not saying it was easy on him because it wasn't. Pain and disappointment is never easy. When he struggled, he would go to prayer. He would praise God for all He had done. David chose to focus on the blessing and not what was taken from him because he understood his part. He knew God's love, so he excepted his consequences, learned from them, and moved on. We can learn to do the same.
