The ark was a powerful treasure that had impact on anyone that was near it. It was used to inflict fear into the hearts of the enemy and joy into those that followed God. It was made to have a physical place for God on Earth. However, sometimes God needed a break from His people because they refused to listen. It is frustrating when instructions are ignored.
The ark was captured by the enemy for a while, but the enemy paid a high price for taking it. They made sure that the Hebrews got it back and it was a moment in history that they made sure they did not loose when they were in excile. The first attempt did not go well, so they spent time preparing to retrieve and the second time it was done right.
King David had prepared a permanent home for the ark. I think the Jews in excile were clinging onto the notion of pyromancy since they had lost so much. When you loose everything, then a little security like permanency starts looking very appealing. It was moment in time of great joy and anticipation for the nation.
With all good things there was organization and propriety upheld to keep that moment in time from being ruined and it worked. It also shows that dancing and music only enhance emotions and can be a very good thing. Everyone was was happy, but Saul's daughter/David's first wife, Michal. She was full of hate toward David for displaying his feelings so openly and celebrating with commoners. The ark has the power to bring out the true heart of a person.
