Isaiah had a vision on war. Israel was going to go to war with Babylon who was not a major player in the days of Isaiah, but their role was in the judgment of God's people. They respresented the culture of arrogance and independence from God. God's people were ignoring God and stuck to their pride. He gathered His warriors in great numbers for war.
The battle was not noisy, but did not last very long. God melted the hearts and placed a great terror in them. It was more psychological than physical. The day of the Lord will be a cruel day filled with wrath. Evil will be punished. No infant, child, or woman will be spared. The young men will be struck down. It was dark times.
When it comes to war against God, compassion and mercy disappear. The population is reduced dramatical, but it does make a point. Babylon was once a jewel, but God changed everything and not even the animals stayed around 500 years before Jesus was born. It became home to jackals, owls, wild goats, and hyenas. This is was considered unclean and not worth inhabitating.
Human governments and armies only stay on top for so long. God's government and army is eternally victorious, strong, and established. God is more powerful anything or anyone. Go against God is to bite off more than you can chew. It is why we should fear God. If we go too far, He could wipe us out too. If you stay close to Him, then it will all work out better than expected.
