Paul was on his third and final missionary journey. He was re-routing the original to check in and see how he could help the churches grow. On this journey he would try to hit a few more places. He made it to Thessalonica and stayed for three weeks. A large number of people wanted to join them including Greeks and women.
Paul reasoned with the people by using scripture. Scripture used in the proper context can be your strongest verbal defense against the enemy. It doesn't seem to help with jealousy, but maybe prayer will. People have to soften their hearts and see their value before jealousy can truly go away.
The Jews stated a mob against Paul and Silas. It got so bad that the Jews stormed their friend's home in search for them. Since they were not found their friend, Jason, and his family were punished like it was their fault. Paul and Silas left Thessalonica.
Where ever Paul and Silas went trouble followed. The next city they went to was Berea. There the people listened and were open to discuss, but the agitators of Thessalonica followed and would against the missionaries. Paul was sent away to avoid trouble, but Silas and Timothy were allowed to stay.
Paul moved on to Athens alone. In Athens the idolatry distressed Paul, so he preached. He was an evangelical missionary. The people did not like Paul's strange ideas. They listened to what he had to say about who God is, but the message only reached a few people. Most people just talked amongst themselves and sneered.
