We have to know God's law to understand sin. Through the law God reveals our sinful nature and how we ultimately belong to Him. We need to live according to the law to show our devotion and love. When you have salvation, then the law helps you bear fruit for God.
Sin bears fruit to death. The law is used to reveal sin. You can't live deceived or hide your sin when the Holy Law is clear. Sin will try to make you manipulate God's law, but it will not work on Him and He is the ultimate judge. This is when the law will condemn, but not until your hidden sins are exposed. Human nature is to sin. It is to live for our pleasures and desires. It is instinct to try to be happy above all else. Left to our own devices without guidance, we would work against the Holy Spirit.
Once Jesus enters in our personal lives, then we desire to do good. We want to change, but the sin nature wants us to do things differently. That is why we need to be in God's Word daily to remind ourselves what really matters in life. It keeps our soul desires in attention. This is how we can delight in God's laws. It can redirect our desires.
Sin causes a war of desires. It is a war of control of the mind: personal desires vs desires of the soul. Soul desires will bring personal gain of many kinds like character, integrity, honesty, discernment, love, and more. Sin opens the door for Satan to tell your mind lies: you are ugly, fat, no good, hopeless. He wants you to think you are wretched because then you can't produce any fruits of the spirit. You are now in survival mode or worse. It makes you a prisoner of sin or subject to legalism.
The Holy Spirit is the only one that can help you out of that mess. Use God's law to bring life not death. It is Holy and so are it's commands.
