I don't know about you, but I do not in particularly like it when people just show up at my house unannounced. I am not prepared to meet people. My house may not be tidy. I may be in the middle of something and they are stopping me. However, sometimes it is not about me. Other times, it could be a blessing.
I wonder if Jesus' parents ever felt that way. After all, when your son is the Messiah, you probably have invited guest all the time. Jesus was born in Bethlehem and his little family stayed there for about two years. Travel was not easy, so with a tiny baby I am sure it would have been incredibly difficult. Plus, they were probably adding onto that family too.
While they stayed in one place, the Magi were traveling a great distance to find Jesus. The magi were very wise astrologers. On their journey they stopped to speak with King Herod. Unlike them, he was not too happy to hear that a new king had been born. All he heard was my replacement is around the corner.
This is when the first hunt for Jesus began. His enemies swarmed even when he was a baby. The deceitful king asked the magi to come tell him when they found the Messiah, so that he could go worship Him too. They continued following God's star right to Jesus' house. When they found Him they were overjoyed and began to worship Him at his mother's feet. They presented Him with rich gifts of gold, frankincense (incense), and myrrh.
When they were getting ready to return they had a dream. In the dream God told them not to return the way they had come. They finally understood that Herod could not be trusted and went home a safer route for Jesus' sake. So, when you have an uninvited guest think twice before not opening the door. They may be a gift from God.
Matthew 2: 1-12
